Hardwired vs plug-in (NEMA 14-50) — when each makes sense.

Short answer: Hardwired install runs the wall connector's input wires directly to the breaker — fastest, manufacturer-warrantied, permanent. Plug-in NEMA 14-50 install uses a 240V outlet that a portable charger plugs into — cheaper, portable, capped at 32A per code. Hardwired for permanent homes with 48A-capable cars; plug-in for renters, Bolt owners, or homeowners who want to take the charger when they move.

Hardwired install

The charger's input wires connect directly to the breaker via a hardwire whip. No outlet, no plug.

NEMA 14-50 plug-in install

A 240V, 50A receptacle on a 40A breaker. Portable EV chargers (Tesla Mobile Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus portable, JuiceBox plug-in version) plug into this outlet.

What you can't do

You can't install a 48A hardwired Wall Connector and then plug a 14-50 portable charger into it as a backup. The Wall Connector is hardwired-only. Some installers will run both — a hardwired Wall Connector AND a separate 14-50 outlet — for the rare household that needs both (premium dual-EV setups). Add ~$800 for the additional outlet.
