Hardwired vs plug-in (NEMA 14-50) — when each makes sense.
Short answer: Hardwired install runs the wall connector's input wires directly to the breaker — fastest, manufacturer-warrantied, permanent. Plug-in NEMA 14-50 install uses a 240V outlet that a portable charger plugs into — cheaper, portable, capped at 32A per code. Hardwired for permanent homes with 48A-capable cars; plug-in for renters, Bolt owners, or homeowners who want to take the charger when they move.
Hardwired install
The charger's input wires connect directly to the breaker via a hardwire whip. No outlet, no plug.
- Faster — supports the full 48A (or 80A for Lightning Pro)
- Manufacturer warranty applies — Tesla, Wallbox, ChargePoint all require hardwired for full warranty
- Cleaner aesthetic — no outlet to look at
- Permanent — the charger stays with the home if you sell
- Slightly more expensive install — $1,290+ vs $680+ for NEMA 14-50
NEMA 14-50 plug-in install
A 240V, 50A receptacle on a 40A breaker. Portable EV chargers (Tesla Mobile Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus portable, JuiceBox plug-in version) plug into this outlet.
- Capped at 32A continuous per NEC 625 (80% of 40A breaker)
- Portable — take the charger with you to other 14-50 outlets (campgrounds, vacation homes)
- Cheaper install — $680–$1,400
- Some manufacturer warranties don't apply — Tesla specifically discourages 14-50 use for Wall Connector warranty
- Aesthetically more visible — outlet on the wall
Decision matrix
- Tesla / Rivian / Lightning / Ioniq 5 / EV6 (48A cars) → hardwired Wall Connector. The cars can use 48A, hardwired captures it.
- Chevy Bolt (32A cap) → NEMA 14-50. The Bolt can't use more than 32A, so the cheaper outlet captures everything available.
- Mach-E (older 32A) or Volt (32A) → NEMA 14-50
- Renter or moving in 2 years → NEMA 14-50 + portable charger (you can take it with you)
- Permanent home, long-term plans → hardwired
- Two 14-50s already in place from prior owner → use them as-is, or upgrade one to hardwired Wall Connector for the daily driver
What you can't do
You can't install a 48A hardwired Wall Connector and then plug a 14-50 portable charger into it as a backup. The Wall Connector is hardwired-only. Some installers will run both — a hardwired Wall Connector AND a separate 14-50 outlet — for the rare household that needs both (premium dual-EV setups). Add ~$800 for the additional outlet.
